12:00 PM Medical Reserve Corps:
The Medical Reserve Corps and HOSA work together to engage youth in volunteer activities to help strengthen local public health emergency response and community resiliency. Low country Medical Reserve Corps was made after 911 and Katrina because the need for it arose. It started in November 15, 2006. It has partner programs with White House's USA Freedom Corps and DHS' Citizens Corps. 2:00 PM Behind the Yellow Line: The Real CSI: Steve Lambert gave a brief history of Forensic DNA, current and future technologies, forensics as a career, educational requirements and interesting cases. Some things I learned is that DNA can tell the gender and ethnicity of the contributor. It can link serial crimes. Biological evidence include, but is not limited to blood, semen, and saliva. As Mr. Lambert said, "Every crime is different. " By the end he gave examples of different local cases, from murders by the father to the incorrect person going to jail because DNA testing hadn't been developed. 3:00 PM Hidden in Plain View: Dena Rapp Ed. D., President and Founder of Rivers of Justice. Each year in the United States, between 100,000 and 300,000 children are victims of sex trafficking, the average age being 12. Human Trafficking involved females and males. For every one male, five females are put into Human Trafficking. While trafficking is largely a hidden social problem, many are in plain view if you know what to look for. |
