Who am I?
My name is Wilneydi Lopez and I am a Pre-Medicine senior at the Academy for the Arts Science and Technology. At a young age, I never thought about going to college. I was a Hispanic immigrant whose only goal was to fit into the American society. Now that I am a young adult all that I think about is my future. A way to describe this is using a quote by Jon Stewart, “See, the thing about a moral compass is, if you take it out and check it from time to time, you don’t have to wait for history to tell you you’re facing the wrong direction.” To me, this says that if you work hard enough you won’t have to look back at your past to acknowledge when you went wrong. That is why I have pushed myself to be the absolute best I can be. My short-term goals are to receive enough scholarships so that I can focus on my school work, instead of payments. I’m trying to get my GPA and SAT scores higher . My long-term goals are to get a master’s degree in Psychology and to help local kids deal with their past so they can move on to their future. A personal goal is to travel the world and help as many people as I can while taking in the different cultures. To meet these goals, I’m currently in six school clubs and am involved in vigorous community service. I never turn in things late and I also do my best work the first time. I have saved all the money I have made at work so that I have emergency money when I’m in college.
To understand my present and future goals, there has to be knowledge of my past. I was brought to America from Venezuela when I was around six years old. I did not know any English and my family had no American money. Our beginning in this fast paced world of rights and freedom was a bit rocky. I still remember crying every day in elementary school because I did not know what the teacher was saying. All of these things made me grow as a person and that is why I now jump at the chance to help people. In the year 2013, I became a Dream Act student. That is what is allowing me to stay legally in this country so I can chase my desire of becoming a Psychologist in the United States. This was my ticket to all the doors that have been closed to me my whole life. I could finally get my license, an ID, get a cell phone plan, and the greatest of all, I could apply to the University of my choosing. The only downside is that I'm considered out of state in every state and must pay out of state tuition. Money issues will not stop me from becoming a psychologist. I would be if I didn't want to do Psychology. It affects my life, the way I see people, and my relationships. I always look up new facts and techniques to try to help the people around me. A life without a desire to be a psychologist would not be a life I want. For that reason, I display my past and my present with my school transcripts, records, etc. Hopefully, that will be the key to my future.
