Messenger system
Hypothalamus: connects the nervous system to the endocrine system
o Messages from nervous to endocrine
o Tells the two to work together
o The hypothalamus secretes gonadotropic-releasing hormone (GnRH)
Pituitary Gland: grand master that gives the message
o Secrete hormones to other glands
o Secretes hormones that help control or regulate the other hormones
o The hormones released by the pituitary gland are gonadotropins (LH and FSH), growth hormone (GH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), prolactin, antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin.
Thyroid Gland: controls growth and metabolism
o Helps the body consume energy
It releases thyroid hormone (T4 and T3) which is required for metabolism and body homeostasis.
Parathyroid: help regulate calcium
o Calcium helps with electrical so affects muscular system which affects heart
o The parathyroid gland is involved in calcium, phosphate and vitamin D regulation
Adrenal glands: secrets hormones that controls reaction and makes the body be in homeostasis
o Sodium, water, fight or flight response
o The outside part of the gland (adrenal cortex) makes cortisol, aldosterone and sex hormones. The centre of the adrenal gland (adrenal medulla) makes adrenaline
Thymus: immune system in children
o Not much use after puberty
o The gland produces thymosins, which are hormones that stimulate the development of antibodies. The thymus also produces T-lymphocytes which are white blood cells that fight infections and destroy abnormal cells.
Pineal Gland: Sleep cycle
o Found in the brain
o Releases melatonin
Reproductive gland: reproduction hormone
o Ovaries – are inside the female pelvis. They make female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone .
o Testes – they hang in the male scrotal sack. They make male sex hormones like testosterone.
Pancreas: secretes insulin
o Sucrose to high causing diabetes if not for insulin
o It also makes other hormones such as glucagon and somatostatin.

Addison's disease:
Addison’s disease is adrenal insufficiency. It is when the Adrenal gland is not putting off enough hormones because of primary or secondary insufficiency. Primary insufficiency is when there has been a destruction of the adrenal glands. Secondary is when something messed up in the pituitary gland. Some symptoms include: fatigue, dehydration, electrolytes messed up, kidney shut down, etc. Image: http://endocrine.niddk.nih.gov/pubs/addison/addison.aspx Diabetes Insipidus:
Diabetes Insipidus happens when the pituitary gland doesn’t turn off the anti-diuretic hormone from the kidney. This causes a loss of nutrients and electrolytes which can lead to dry skin and dehydration. Diabetes Insipidus comes from a head injury or brain tumor that has altered the pituitary gland. Image: http://www.medicinenet.com/dehydration/page2.htm Hyperthyroidism:
Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroids are overactive. This makes a person intolerant to heat. Some symptoms include bulging eyes, high blood rate, tremors and weight loss. Image: http://safetyca.info/diseases/the-burns-archive-cbs-news-coverage-eye-care-in-the-1800s-2 Hypothyroidism:
Hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid does not produce the hormones that it needs. This makes a person intolerant to cold. Some of the symptoms are hair loss, apathy, lethargy, dry skin, constipation, anorexia, muscles aches and weakness. Image: http://nyahmag.com/hair-loss-by-tracy-garner/ Acromegaly:
Acromegaly is a hormonal disease that develops when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood. It causes many problems such as headaches, enlarged tongue, pain and limited joint mobility, and impaired vision. Acromegaly tends to progress slowly, early signs may not be readily apparent for several years Information: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/acromegaly/basics/definition/con-20019216 Image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_the_Giant |
Cushions Disease:
Cushions Disease occurs when there is too much adrenal hormones. This problem happens in the pituitary gland and causes hyper secretion. When cortisol is secreted at high levels it can cause emotional disturbance, round faces, osteoporosis, weakness, depression, skin ulcers, and muscle weakness. Image: http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1104780 Diabetes Mellitus:
Diabetes Mellitus is a problem in the pancreas where not enough insulin is produced or the pancreas isn't using the insulin that is produced. Insulin is needed in the body to break down sugary. Hyperglycemia, too much insulin, leads to dry mouth, hot flashes, headaches, polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, etc. Hypoglycemia, not enough insulin, leads to extreme mood changes, headaches, sluggishness, etc. In type 1 diabetes, no insulin is produced. In type 2 diabetes, the body has insulin, but the body is not using it. Image: http://healthfavo.com/diabetes-mellitus-pancreas-on-healthfavo-com.html Dwarfism:
There are two main categories of dwarfism -- disproportionate and proportionate. Disproportionate dwarfism is characterized by an average-size torso and shorter arms and legs or a shortened trunk with longer limbs. In proportionate dwarfism, the body parts are in proportion but shortened. Dwarfism can be caused by any of more than 200 conditions. Causes of proportionate dwarfism include metabolic and hormonal disorders such as growth hormone deficiency. A Goiter is an abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland. I may be caused because there is too much or too little production of thyroxine and T-3. The symptoms include coughing, swelling at base of neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing.
